The CN MacMillan yard |
Description: |
Considered to be the largest of its kind in Canada and second largest on the continent, the CN MacMillan yard handles over 1 million rail cars annually which makes it busy place and with the increase of traffic on the CN, seems to be running to its full capacity. Here you can see CN local 545 (if I’m not mistaking) with CN 4761 and GMTX 2277 enter the yard (featured in the right) after picking up some cars from the storage tracks at the south end as a switching crew with CN 4116, slug 207 and 7253 (featured in the left) pulls out from one of the storage tracks in the left after dropping off their consist. In the very middle, you can see CN 7200 with slug 230 far off in the distance as they a new consist. |

CN 541 at Snider South |
Description: |
CN local 541 which services the Newmarket Subdivision South of the CN York subdivision approaches Snider South as it makes its way down south to service Imperial Oil (Esso). The train dropped off it’s consist of eight tank cars and picked up the eight that were destined for the CN MacMillan yard (where the train originates). This train came shortly after a southbound GO train cleared the line. The Newmarket subdivision which was originally built by CN Rail is now owned by Metrolinx which is the parent company of GO Transit and operates Express commuter trains between Union Station (Downtown Toronto) and Barrie Ontario. CN only has two trains that operate on this line: CN 541 and 545 which operates north of the York sub. I was really lucky to catch local 541 for it runs almost daily but at different times most of which are under the cover of darkness. The rare appearance of two GP9’s operating on the main has also made this capture really special. Just to think that these engines are now over 60 years old and are still going strong on a Class 1 in 2019! I take my hat off to the engineers who designed such durable and mechanically indestructible engines. :) |
